for theory examination passes.
Getting Started
Once
you have started your flying training you will need to undertake
a Medical Examination with one of the CASA Designated Aviation Medical
Examiners (DAME). Holders of a Commercial Pilot Licence need to
complete a Class One Medical which is then renewed yearly. The initial
medical will include a general medical and then further specialist
assessments will be made for hearing, eyesight etc. The specialist
tests are not required yearly.
If you have some doubts that you may not meet these
standards, it is worth speaking to one of the DAMEs. Many people
have given up the opportunity to fly in the mistaken belief that
a medical condition they have would have stopped them from flying
when in fact this is not correct.

After you complete your medical you will be issued
with your Student Pilot Licence. This is very much like a learner’s
permit.
The SPL allows you to train for your first formal
Pilot Licence, the General Flying Progress Test (GFPT). Training
for your GFPT is one of the most exciting phases of flight training
that you will ever undertake.
This is where you actually learn to fly the aircraft
in all its many configurations. You will learn all the basics such
as climbing, descending, turning, and stalling before starting to
fly the aircraft in the circuit area where you will practise takeoffs
and landings. Once your instructor is confident that you are able
to competently handle any situation that you might encounter, you
will be sent for your very first solo flight. This is a flight that
you will relive for the rest of your life. Even the most experienced
Airline Captains with years of airline flying time will vividly
recount their first solo flight!

After consolidating your circuit procedures, you
will then return to the Archerfield training area for a series of
flights where you will learn some more advanced skills including
forced landings, advanced stalling, compass turns, and instrument
flying. Throughout this time you will see your skill level steadily
improving and your confidence growing. You will also undertake your
first solo flight to the training area. This spectacular area includes
flying over the beautiful coastal areas of Moreton Bay along the
beaches of Stradbroke Island, as well as the picturesque rural areas
surrounding Beaudesert.
You will learn to land the aircraft in different
wind conditions and on shorter runways. This training prepares you
for your future flights to locations away from our home base at
Archerfield.

Flight Test
Once your instructor believes that you have attained
the required standard you will be recommended for a flight test
for the issue of your GFPT. This flight test is normally conducted
by one of our Approved Test Officers, who you will have met during
the course of your training.
On the successful completion of your GFPT, you
are now licenced to carry passengers within the confines of the
Archerfield training area.

Private Pilot Licence (PPL)
Once
you have completed your GFPT you can start working towards your
full PPL licence, which will enable you to fly anywhere in Australia.
This phase of your training sees you really expand
your horizons. The GFPT has taught you how to fly the aircraft.
Now you need to learn how to navigate the aircraft across long distances.
The training is designed to develop your skills in map reading and
flight planning.
You fly to Toowoomba, Kingaroy, Bundaberg, Hervey
Bay, Casino, Coffs Harbour, Wondai, Pittsworth, Grafton, Coolangatta
and Maroochydore to name but a few of the navigation exercise destinations.
At the completion of the Private Pilot Licence
phase of your training, you now commence what is called the pre-commercial
phase of your training.

Pre-Commercial Training
After
completing your Private Pilot Licence you will have accrued 12 hours
solo flying. Before being recommended for a Commercial Pilot Licence
you will need to accrue 70 hours Pilot in Command, or solo time.
It is not simply a matter of “clocking up
the hours” as some people do. At RQAC, this time is carefully
planned and monitored. It is important for your future professional
development that you undertake flying to many different destinations.
These destinations need to encompass all the different environments
that you could expect to encounter in your future flying career.
The destinations will vary from remote locations to busy city airports,
together with all the different airspace environments that are encountered
in these differing locations.
During this time you will be inducted into our
mock Charter company, and you will undertake mock charter flights
under the direction of your Flight Instructor. These flights are
not simply a matter of “take Mrs Bloggs to Toowoomba and return
home”. They reflect accurately some of the demanding tasks
that will be expected of any Commercial Pilot. They involve a complex
set of tasks that require you to exercise your command judgment
and initiative, an essential component of anyone who aspires to
the highest levels in commercial aviation. The confidence and experience
that you will gain during this time will greatly assist you in all
your future positions, but, most particularly, it will equip you
well for that all important first flying job.
Throughout this time a number of your Commercial
navigation exercises are scheduled. This ensures that your personal
flying standards are continually monitored. We are assessing that
your professional standards are continually evolving, that you are
not developing any poor habits in your aircraft handling, airmanship
or navigation techniques.

You
will also undertake training for your Night VFR Rating. This Rating
entitles you to fly during the hours of darkness. Up to this point
all your flying will have been during daylight hours.
Firstly you will be trained in night circuit operations.
The cues that are used at night are quite different from those which
are used for daylight operations. Once your Instructor is happy
that you have competently mastered the techniques, you will be sent
for some solo consolidation of your newly developed skills.
After the completion of the circuit phase of your
night training, you will then once again move further a afield with
night cross-country navigation exercises. You will learn the art
of drawing a mud-map for the expected route, as well as polishing
your skills using the radio navigation aids.
Throughout this time your flying skills will become
more polished and professional, and your confidence will have increased
markedly. You will have completed your Constant Speed/ Retractable
Undercarriage endorsement on our C172RG, and you will now be completing
the latter stages of the Commercial Pilot Licence syllabus.
When our Flight Standards Officer is happy that
you meet the RQAC standards for Commercial Pilot Licence, you will
be recommended for your flight test. You will then join the elite
ranks of qualified Professional Pilots. Your new career is about
to really take-off.
After your Commercial Pilot Licence
After completing your Commercial Pilot Licence
you have a number of choices. You can obtain employment as a Pilot.
This could involve charter flying, aerial work, or aerial photography
work, or perhaps work on a cattle property flying the property aircraft.
Many people choose to further enhance their
employment opportunities by completing either a Command Instrument
Rating (CIR) or Flight Instructor
Rating (FIR). |
