Degree Program - Objectives

The Aviation industry is increasingly demanding commercial pilots to possess University-level qualifications. The Griffith University, in conjunction with approved flight training providers like the RQAC, has developed an integrated Aviation Degree program that aims to develop skills and competence in aviation theory and airmanship skills. The Degree program is structured to enable students to obtain the necessary CASA licences to qualify as a Commercial Pilot and cover tertiary subjects in the areas of Science, Business and Aviation.

Courses - Flying Training

The RQAC is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) approved by the Queensland Government’s Department of Employment and Training (DET). Training is delivered using nationally recognised training packages and in accordance with CASA Day VFR Syllabus.

In accordance with the Griffith University’s School of Aviation www.gu.edu.au/school/avn, all GU students will need to obtain a Commercial Pilot Licence (theory and practical), Multi-Engine Command Instrument Rating or Instructor Rating and the theory components of Airline Transport Pilot Licence to fulfill the aviation component of the Degree program.

In Nov 2001, the RQAC commenced ab-initio flight training for China Airlines, Taiwan’s National carrier, becoming the first and only flying training establishment in Queensland to deliver pilot training to a major overseas airline. This stringent airline training system and procedure now applies to all commercial students who undertake their flight training with the RQAC. Once enrolled, you will be assigned a Senior Flight Instructor who will design your own personalised training program to ensure you achieve all your Aviation Qualifications in the shortest possible time whilst taking your University study load into consideration.

Courses Theory Training

Aviation theory knowledge is a critical component of your aviation training program. As outlined in the Suggested Training Program, you will be required to obtain passes in a number of RQAC in-house and CASA examinations.

All theory courses, except for the Airline Transport Pilot Licence Theory (ATPL), are conducted using the latest state-of-the-art Computer Based Training (CBT). WA based AIRS Technologies www.airstechnologies.com.au provides an interactive aviation theory course consisting of working through modules on the computer with a visual representation whilst providing an audio explanation. It also uses moving graphics to enhance learning of subject matter.

At the RQAC, we recognize that student pilots require flexibility in their theory training schedule to allow for flight training, University studies, weather conditions and more importantly, differing academic abilities. CBT, thus, offers the students the opportunity to have self-paced studies, increased knowledge retention and provides both the Instructors and student pilots with tailored feedback and assessment.

Your theory training will be supervised by our Senior Ground Instructor and forms part of your personalised training program to ensure optimum integration with your flying training. Our Senior Ground Instructor will also prepare you for your CASA exams via a series of Bob Tait Practice Exams to ensure a sufficient level of proficiency prior to attempting “the real thing”. In the event that you require tuition for specific topics, our team of Instructors at the RQAC is on hand to provide one-on-one tuition.

Financial Cost

Your training at the RQAC may be GST exempt. The cost of your training at the RQAC is dependent on the type of aircraft used, the career option chosen and the number of hours required to achieve competency. As a guide, students should set aside a minimum of $15,000 per year towards the cost of training.

Other ancillary costs include CASA Class 1 Medical, uniforms, training aids, books, maps and AirServices publications.

Financial Assistance

RQAC’s pilot training courses are registered with CENTRELINK and you may be eligible for financial assistance e.g., Youth Assist or AUSTUDY. In addition, the RQAC can arrange for your training to be fully financed!! Please see our Accountant for more details.
